The 6 Most Instagrammable Photo Spots in Old Town Gdansk (Poland)

I was totally awe-struck by beauty of Gdansk while I was there.. and then I flew straight to Riga and immediately forgot about all about it. I think my love for Latvia’s capital overshadowed my memories of Gdansk and it wasn’t until I started looking through my photos a year later, that I remembered how much I enjoyed this city. It was almost impossible to detach my eye from my camera’s viewfinder because everywhere I turned, there was another angle worthy of a photo. Keep reading to discover 6 of the top spots for epic photos in Old Town Gdansk.

THE 6 BEST PHOTO LOCATIONS IN OLD TOWN GDANSK

ULICA DLUGA

Ulica Dluga (Long Street) is the the main thoroughfare in Old Town Gdansk. It leads from the Golden Gate to the Long Market, and is one of the top tourist attractions in the city. 90% of Old Town was destroyed during World War II so everything is newly re-built and renovated. Ul Dluga (along with the rest of Old Town) gives off major Amsterdam vibes, and it’s because the building facades were designed after 17th century Dutch canal houses.

Ul Dluga is a pedestrian only street so you’re free to wander up, down across and around to get the shot. Get there early (especially in the Summer) to beat the crowds as this is one of the busiest streets in Old Town Gdansk.

ULICA PIWNA

Ulica Piwna (Beer Street) runs from the old Arsenal to St. Mary’s Church. It’s shorter than Ulica Dluga and is mostly residential, with a few cafes and bars peppered in, so you’ll find it to be quieter as well.

With it’s red brick exterior and intricate gold ornaments, the old Arsenal (now the Academy of Fine Arts) is one of the most beautiful buildings in Old Town Gdansk. Sandwiched in between the narrow street, the building perfectly closes off Ulica Piwna and provides a ton of interesting lines and angles to photograph.

ST. MARY’S CHURCH

Gdansk’s best vantage point sits at the top of the largest brick church in the world, St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s Church is located on Ulica Piwna, on the opposite end of the old Arsenal. Climb the semi-intense 405 step staircase to the top, and there you’ll find the viewing platform. It’s a little small and you have to clear a railing to get your photo, but the views of Old Town Gdansk are unparalleled.

Head to the top during sunset for the best light.

ULICA MARIAKA

Quite possibly the prettiest street I’ve ever been down, Ulica Mariacka was hard to walk away from.

With it’s charming facades, cobblestone streets and gargoyle drain pipes, this was hands down my favorite place to photograph in Old Town Gdansk. Mariacka Street is where you’ll find the largest concentration of amber dealers in the city and their glittering stalls which line the pavement give off this golden magic that looks great in photos.

MOTLAWA RIVER

Step outside the Old Town gates and you’ll find yourself walking along the promenade of the Motlawa River, staring at the most famous view of Gdansk.

The waterfront is filled with tons of different vantage points and photo options. Head to the center of the Green bridge for shots of the Green Gate and the Motlawa River Embankment, or stop into Mala Sztuka and enjoy an (Instagrammable) drink on the riverbank. Order the Gdanskie Old Fashioned, made with butter infused rum and served in a smoking treasure chest.

ULICA STĄGIEWNA

Cross the Motlawa River via the Green Bridge, and you’ll find yourself on Ulica Stagiewna. The Amber Sky ferris wheel in the middle of Granary Island lends itself for a different type of vibe than the rest of the streets in Old Town Gdansk.

I especially loved photographing this street at night when the ferris wheel was all lit up (and there were less people around).

PHOTO TIP: While you might assume that the photos taken from the top of the Amber Sky would be amazing, think again. The windows are hazy and all scratched up.
