Thank you so much for sharing. Let’s hope people will read these reviews. We unfortunately were short of time and rushed in before it closed at 3pm on Saturdays.
Yes, we paid £40 for kalamari with 2 salads, and a cabbage box. I have never ever in my life tasted such disgusting calamari rings. I did tell them but obviously a crook doesn’t care. The experience left a really bad taste in my mouth, exuse the pun. Whereas we had a beautiful 2 course meal at Retek, for same price, sat down and had knives and forks and a glass.

I totally agree with this article. Having lived in Budapest more than 2 years, I found the food price in the Great Market is literally exorbitant, especially when you do not speak Hungarian. Other things, like paprika powder or tokaj wines, are pretty ok with moderate price(depends on which shop you go), but I really cannot understand why a simple langos which is no more than 1000 HUF in other places would cost you 3-4000 HUF.

Please avoid eating in the Great market, and there are really many hidden gems in this city, which would not rip you off at all / or even really cheap!

So true, for a plate of shared plate we paid $52 aud, way more than the few full restaurant meals we had with drinks. Absolutely ridiculous

Thank you for this information! We’re heading to Budapest in a couple of days, and everything I’ve read says to go to the Market Hall for lunch, but nobody mentions the tourist scams. Being duped is the worst feeling and can shade your whole trip in grey. Not what we want. Thanks to your warning, we may visit the Market Hall, but we’ll eat somewhere else.
